We bring you everything you need to know about gorilla trekking permits. A gorilla permit is a document that grants access to gorilla forests to search for gorillas. Since gorillas are an endangered species, various protective measures have been put in place to regulate access for anyone wishing to see these giants. Mountain gorillas are unique inhabitants of central Africa’s forests, found along the edge of the Albertine Rift.
To catch a glimpse of gorillas in any of their habitats — Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, or Virunga National Park in DR Congo — you must have a permit.
Gorilla trekking permits help regulate the number of trekkers visiting the gorillas each day, and the funds generated go toward gorilla conservation programs. In the 1980s, mountain gorillas came dangerously close to extinction; ongoing conservation efforts are the reason they survive today. Threats such as poaching, encroachment by local communities, and political unrest (including rebel activity) pushed conservationists to train rangers and involve local communities in protection programs — all of which require funding. The introduction of gorilla permits allows conservation bodies to raise sufficient funds, supplementing grants from other conservation organizations.
The Cost of Gorilla Permits
Gorilla trekking is considered one of Africa’s most exclusive safari experiences, largely due to the cost of a single permit. Permit prices vary depending on the country where you choose to trek. Mountain gorillas live in two neighboring habitats — the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the Virunga Conservation Area — spread across four parks in three countries, and permit costs differ accordingly.
Trekking in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park requires a permit costing $1,500, making Rwanda the go-to destination for luxury gorilla safaris. Booking Gorilla Permits
Each country has a government body responsible for issuing gorilla trekking permits, but access is generally channeled through licensed tour operators, making it difficult — sometimes nearly impossible — for individuals to purchase a permit directly.
Permits in Uganda: Trekking permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), which oversees all national parks and wildlife conservation areas in the country. Permits are accessible primarily through registered tour operators, though individual purchases aren’t entirely ruled out.
Permits in Rwanda: Permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board, which manages the country’s parks, game reserves, and other protected areas. These are available through companies recognized to operate in Rwanda.
Permits in DR Congo: Permits are issued by Virunga National Park management, accessible through licensed operators.
